Kentucky high school fall sports will move forward with the Aug. 24 start date decided on in July. The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Board of Control met Thursday to discuss a possible second delay of the season, amid an uptick in cases of coronavirus. Board members voted 16 to 2 to carry on with its current plan.
Logan County High School Athletic Director Greg Howard supported sticking with the schedule.
"Our schools our athletic directors and our couches have done a phenomenal job," he said. "They're professionals and what a better place for our kids to be that's safe and with guidelines set forth by public health. I think they're in the best hands possible."
The state health department and the department of education still have to approve plans for how competitions will be held, including whether they will allow spectators.
Many school districts, including Jefferson County Public schools, have said they may move at a slower pace than the KHSAA. Districts following the KHSAA decision will begin official practices on Monday, with competitions beginning Sept. 7 for all fall sports except football. Football competitions begin Sept. 11.
