The city of Covington is proposing stricter guidelines for homeless shelters to operate on.
New guidelines include access to a toilet and shower 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and a waiting area for people experiencing homelessness to ensure public sidewalks, streets and alleys aren't used for guests waiting to get in.
If a shelter violates a proposed guideline it could face a $100 to $1,000 fine.
This ordinance comes after a report shows more than a thousand people are experiencing homelessness in Northern Kentucky. Covington is the only city in the Northern Kentucky region that has shelters for people experiencing homelessness.
Mayor Joe Meyer previously told WVXU he hopes regional advocacy groups will create a strategic plan to address the issue.
Public officials will discuss the new ordinance at Tuesday night's 6 p.m. meeting at City Hall. Commissioners will vote on the ordinance in two weeks.
