The $17 million project to stabilize the hill along Columbia Parkway begins its first phase Monday. A release from the city says two of three westbound lanes between Delta and Torrence will close that morning for two to three months.
Eastbound lanes will remain open and long delays are expected during rush hour.
The project addresses 12 landslide mitigation sites along two miles of the roadway from Bains Street to Torrence. The first phase of the project focuses on three locations between Kemper Lane and Torrence, noted as areas 7, 8 and 10 in the below project site map.
WVXU reported in April how the city voted to fully fund the repairs to stop landslides. The $17 million is a combination of $9.4 million that had been set aside to build a new District 5 police facility, and $7.6 million of borrowed money. The city will issue bonds that will be repaid with revenues from a property tax increase approved in 2018 for debt service.
Construction is expected to continue through the summer of 2021. You can use Riverside Drive as an alternate route.
