A hearing began Tuesday in federal court in Cleveland that will help a judge determine how much CVS, Walgreens and Walmart should pay two northeast Ohio counties to help them ease the continuing opioid crisis.

Tuesday's verdict comes as CVS, Walgreens and Walmart face thousands of lawsuits filed by communities across the U.S. The companies say they did nothing wrong dispensing huge quantities of opioids.

A 73-year-old married couple from Akron and several others received faulty vaccines at an Ashtabula Walgreens store on Feb. 1 and will have to retake the shots, ideastream has learned. The couple, who asked to remain anonymous, reached out to ideastream after hearing on Feb. 2 that residents at several local nursing homes in the area were given vaccines that may be ineffective due to improper storage.

A federal judge this week denied a request by pharmacy chains to throw out a lawsuit over the opioid crisis brought by Lake and Trumbull counties. U.S. District Judge Dan Polster’s Thursday ruling allows the two counties to move ahead with preparations for a May 2021 trial in federal court, to be held in Cleveland.

State Attorney General Pam Bondi's office announced Friday that it had added the drugstore chains to a lawsuit filed in May against opioid distributors and manufacturers.

The lawsuit alleges the company fulfilled orders "for such large quantities of prescription narcotic pain medication that there could be no associated legitimate medical purpose for their use."
