Franklin County Judge Andy Miller sentenced 38-year-old Kreig Butler, 38, to six months in jail and three years of probation on charges of tampering with evidence and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle. Butler shot and killed 13-year-old Sinzae Reed. The shooting was ruled to be in self defense.

On Friday, Krieg Butler, 38, changed his plea from not guilty to guilty to gun and tampering with evidence charges during the second day of jury deliberations.

Krieg Butler took the stand in his defense Wednesday during his trial in Franklin County Common Pleas Court. Butler is facing felony charges for having a gun improperly and tampering with evidence after he shot and killed 13-year-old Sinzae Reed October 2022.

A Franklin County prosecutor and a defense attorney representing Krieg Butler delivered opening statements Tuesday. Butler shot and killed 13-year-old Sinzae Reed in 2022.

Krieg Butler is scheduled to go on trial Monday in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

Franklin County Assistant Prosecutor David Zeyen said the gun Sinzae Reed is reported to have hasn't been recovered.

The man who, according to police, shot and killed 13-year-old Sinzae Reed in October won't be charged in the shooting but will face criminal gun charges related to his use of a weapon during the confrontation.

Columbus City Council expanded its $3.5 million ShotSpotter program into the Wedgewood Village Apartments area, where 13-year-old Sinzae Reed was shot and killed by a neighbor in October.
