The vaccine is nearly 95% effective in preventing illness, according to an interim analysis of a clinical test involving 30,000 people.

An early glimpse at Pfizer’s experimental COVID-19 vaccine phase 3 clinical trial shows it to be both effective and safe so far, medical experts said Monday. University Hospitals (UH) was chosen as one of 120 sites for the phase 3 trial in August. More than 43,000 people have been enrolled in the trial from all over the world, said Dr. Grace McComsey, vice president of research at UH.

Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine is the first to have data showing that it exceeded the minimum effectiveness threshold set by the Food and Drug Administration for emergency use.

Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a public statement Friday that the company won't have data showing that the vaccine is safe before the third week of November at the earliest.

If the company's vaccine candidate pans out, Americans can receive it for free under the deal. The arrangement is part of the U.S. government's push to have a vaccine widely available by January.
