The state’s new recreational marijuana passed by nearly 57% of Ohio voters takes effect next Thursday, but Republican lawmakers have said they want to tweak the law before that.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said lawmakers should accept “the will of the people” after Tuesday‘s vote on abortion access and legal marijuana, but he still wants changes to the latter law.

Now that ballots have been tallied across the state on Issue 2, some Ohio lawmakers are beginning to talk about could-be tweaks to the statute legalizing adult-use recreational marijuana.

Tuesday is Election Day, and WOSU followed along as Ohio voted for two key ballot measures involving reproductive rights and recreational marijuana.

While the constitutional amendment on reproductive rights on this week’s ballot in Ohio is getting most of the attention and money, the second question - whether the state should legalize recreational marijuana - is a big one too.

Sherrod Brown announced in a video on social media that he voted "yes" on Issues 1 and 2 in the 2023 General Election. JD Vance has left requests for comments unreturned for over a month on the topic.

Early voting numbers in Ohio for the Nov. 7 election on Issues 1 and 2, as well as local candidate and issue races, are up 8% from the August special election, a statewide election on just one constitutional amendment.
