The call is growing louder for the Lorain County Fair to ban the Confederate flag. The Community Foundation of Lorain County will boycott the fair as long as the flag is permitted onsite. The foundation is latest in a list of entities pushing for a ban, including grassroots group Lorain County Fair Minded Coalition and local and state officials.

Lorain County's five-year average infant morality rate in 2018 was eight deaths per 1,000 live births. In 2011, it was more than twice that. “21.7 [per 1,000 live births] was our five-year rolling average, which is a pretty high rate," said the county's health commissioner Dave Covell. "Our average rate among white babies was 7.2, so you can see there's a huge discrepancy.”

A tax reassessment requested by a gas transmission company has Lorain County officials frustrated by the possibility of losing nearly 40 percent of the expected taxes before the county has collected any money at all. The NEXUS pipeline was initially estimated to bring $9 million to Lorain County, but the company is appealing to the Ohio Department of Taxation for a reassessment of its value.
