The public had its first and only chance to meet with State Department officials about a new environmental analysis of the Keystone XL pipeline this week. Some protesters drove hours to attend.

Judge Brian Morris wrote the State Department's analysis of the pipeline's potential environmental impact fell short of a "hard look" on several items, including greenhouse gas emissions.

The Nebraska Public Service Commission voted 3-2 on Monday to approve the controversial pipeline — albeit not on the route preferred by TransCanada, the company behind the Keystone XL.

The oil leak occurs just a few days before Nebraska state regulators will decide on the fate of TransCanada's controversial sister project, the Keystone XL Pipeline.

The move reverses former President Barack Obama's 2015 decision to reject the controversial pipeline.
