Updated: 4:20 p.m., Friday, Nov. 13, 2020 As COVID-19 cases are soaring across Ohio and here in Cuyahoga County, Cleveland Clinic is postponing non-essential surgical procedures that require a hospital stay until Friday, Nov. 20 to free up beds and staffing for potential COVID-19 patients. The health system initially paused surgeries for two days, but extended the postponement to a week on Friday, officials said. They will reevaluate surgical cases on an ongoing basis, a Clinic spokesperson said.

The U.S. Census will end at 6 a.m. Friday morning, after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in favor of the Trump Administration’s efforts to halt the count. Local workers say stopping the process now will hurt the communities that still have low response rates.

Updated: 1:15 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2020 Cuyahoga County has reached a settlement in a wrongful death lawsuit filed after inmate at the county jail committed suicide. County council on Tuesday approved the terms of the $950,000 settlement with the family of Gregory Fox who died after he was found unconscious in his jail cell on Aug. 28, 2018, in an apparent suicide attempt.

A second ballot drop-off location will be available for Cuyahoga County voters as of Tuesday morning. Cuyahoga County Board of Elections staff will be available to accept completed ballots starting at 8 a.m. at the Campus International High School on Chester Avenue. The parking lot for the school is directly across E. 30th Street from the back of the board of election main building and the main drop box.

Updated: 11:50 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 7, 2020 The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections will not collect completed ballots at local libraries this fall, despite a federal judge’s ruling this week that seemed to allow it, a board member told ideastream Wednesday. U.S. District Judge Dan Polster interpreted a recent state election directive more broadly than Secretary of State Frank LaRose intended, Democratic board member Inajo Davis Chappell said.

Updated: 6:05 p.m., Friday, Oct. 2, 2020 Everyone in the hall at Tuesday’s presidential debate tested negative for the coronavirus before entering the event, according to a statement from the Cleveland Clinic, which co-sponsored the debate with Case Western Reserve University and helped develop and enforce COVID-19 safety protocols.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Elections will be allowed to collect ballots at a second location near the board’s headquarters, as Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose partially lifts a prohibition on plans to expand ballot drop-off locations.

An ongoing battle in federal court has caused confusion on when the 2020 U.S. Census will actually end, but while that gets sorted out, Cuyahoga County officials are still pushing to increase the region’s response rate ahead of next week’s deadline.
