Reem Atia’s family arrived in Cleveland just days after a heavy December snowfall in 2016. It was her first time seeing snow and a stark contrast to life in Jordan, where her Syrian family had first sought refuge.

More than 500 philanthropic organizations nationwide have signed a letter asking the U.S. Census Bureau to allow more time for the 2020 census, including several local groups, after the bureau recently announced it would end the count a month earlier than planned. Among the Northeast Ohio organizations signed the letter were the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation in Cleveland, Cleveland Foundation, Akron Community Foundation and George Gund Foundation.

Five years after the death of Tamir Rice, his family is partnering with the Cleveland Foundation to create a fund for arts and community projects. The Tamir Rice Legacy Fund aims to connect youth with outlets for self-expression. Samaria Rice created the fund in honor of her son’s love of art and says she hopes it will keep his memory alive.

In Governor Mike DeWine’s first budget due later this week, he plans to allocate $10 million to the State Child Health Insurance Program for lead cleanup projects, the same amount as in the previous budget. He’ll also call for a $10,000 tax credit to homeowners for lead abatement projects. DeWine laid out the new measures to address lead contamination in Ohio during a visit to University Hospital’s Rainbow Center for Women and Children Wednesday.
