Atlanta Police said the suspect, 21-year-old Robert Aaron Long of Woodstock, Ga., told authorities the shooting spree was not racially motivated. Police added it was too soon to know whether his actions should be considered a hate crime. The killings are just the latest in an upsurge of violence against Asian Americans in the United States.

The Cherokee County Sheriff's Office and Atlanta Police Department are investigating attacks at three spas. Authorities say many of the victims appear to be of Asian descent.

Racially motivated attacks against Asian Americans have been on the rise since the start of the pandemic, but a Los Angeles-based civil rights group says the actual numbers are even higher.

The assaults have prompted some businesses to close early, while volunteers have set up protective escorts for older residents.
