Advocacy for more passenger rail service in Ohio in recent years hasn't been fruitful. In 2011, then-Gov. John Kasich was among a few Republican governors who turned down federal funds that had been previously agreed to by their Democratic or independent predecessors for such expansion.

The proposed Amtrak rail line would link Columbus to Cleveland as well as Cincinnati and Dayton.

Columbus is the second-largest U.S. city without intercity rail. However, with the new infrastructure bill, rail service linking Ohio’s three C’s could be back on track. We’ll mark the 50th anniversary of Amtrak and plans to return rail travel between Ohio’s major cities.

With the bipartisan infrastructure bill passing in the U.S. House, Amtrak will look to expand its services around the country. And there are hints at an Ohio expansion.

President Biden has proposed spending $80 billion to upgrade and expand passenger rail service nationwide. In Ohio, that would allow Amtrak to connect Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati and Dayton.
