For the third time in four years, an Ohio State quarterback is a finalist for the Heisman Trophy. Redshirt freshman C.J. Stroud will be in New York at the Saturday ceremony for the award that goes to the nation’s most outstanding college football player.
Stroud has completed 71% of his passes for 3,862 yards, 38 touchdowns and five interceptions in his first year as a starter. He follows in the footsteps of Justin Fields, who was a finalist in 2019, and Dwayne Haskins, who was a finalist in 2018.
Neither Fields nor Haskins won the award.
Alabama quarterback Bryce Young, Pittsburgh quarterback Kenny Pickett and Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson are also finalists.
Young broke the SEC championship game record with 421 yards passing in a victory against Georgia's vaunted defense on Saturday. The sophomore has thrown for 4,322 yards, 43 touchdowns and just four interceptions this season.
Pickett passed for 4,319 yards with 42 touchdowns this year to eclipse school marks.
Hutchinson has 14 sacks and helped the Wolverines end an eight-game losing streak to Ohio State.
No Ohio State players have won the Heisman Trophy since quarterback Troy Smith won in 2006.
