Barber's Antony and Cleopatra is an American tribute to Shakespeare if ever there were one. The three-act opera debuted with a surprising lack of success for American audiences in 1966, but after revision in 1975 and a "re-premiere," it has earned better appreciation. The opera follows Shakespeare's text for Antony and Cleopatra; the fictitious, doomed love story of two of history's most popular characters.
