“I think of her as the Beyoncé of the Baroque.”
That’s Early Interval soprano Elizabeth McConnaughey’s take on Barbara Strozzi, a woman who, centuries ago, bucked convention by becoming a composer and a single mom at a time when women just didn’t do these things.
Marking the 400th anniversary of Strozzi’s birth, the Columbus-based early music ensemble The Early Interval and guest harpsichordist Alexandra Snyder Dunbar joined me in the Classical 101 studio recently to give us a preview of their upcoming concert, Musica Femina, featuring music by women composers of the Baroque era.
Presented by Early Music in Columbus, the concert takes place Friday, April 12 at 8 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Seminary’s Gloria Dei Chapel.
