Concerts @ Ohio State, presenting performances by the students and faculty of the School of Music at Ohio State University, begins a new broadcast season at 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7.
These Sunday afternoon programs through March will be devoted to concerts performed in Weigel Hall and Mershon Auditorium on Ohio State's campus. Ensembles represented include the Ohio State University Symphony Orchestra, Men's Glee Club, Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, Flute Troupe and chamber music configurations from duets to small orchestras.
Season highlights include:
- CellOhio's performance of music by the iconoclastic "downtown" composer Julius Eastman
- A dynamite performance of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Pathetique symphony
- A glorious all-Liszt piano recital by Ryan Behan
- Michael Rene Torres playing Charles Koechlin's Epitaphe a Jean Harlow
- Franz Schubert's Winterreise with Stanley Workman and Ed Bak
- The local premiere of Charles Wakefield Cadman's opera Ramala
I'm delighted to introduce to a wider audience William Ballenger, the new director of the Ohio State School of Music. His Flourish for Flutes opens the series, played by the OSU Flute Troupe and directed by Katherine Borst Jones.
