'Musica Cubana' Returns for New Season

Musica Cubana, Classical 101's celebration of Cuban and Latino music, returns for a new season at 1 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 1. Five new programs will air Sundays in October.

Musica Cubana features Columbus-based pianist Orlay Alonso as co-host, music director and muse. We'll hear music by Cuban-born composers Tania Leon, Leo Brouwer, Ignacio Cervantes, Gonzalo Roig, Jose Maria Vitier and Ernesto Lecuona.

You'll need your dancing shoes, too. Musica Cubana presents all the rhythms and flavors of Cuba—the bolero, habanera, criolla, guaracha and tango congo.

The Spanish influence celebrates music by composers Enrique Granados, Joaquin Nin, Isaac Albeniz and Manuel de Falla.

Falla's Ritual Fire Dance is Orlay's theme song:

Orlay recently made his debut with the Columbus Symphony, and maintains a busy concert schedule along with teaching private lessons and in his studio at Capital University.

Orlay and I recently sat down to chat about his career and Musica Cubana:

Musica CubanaSing, dance and shake with us Sunday afternoons at 1 on Classical 101.

All Musica Cubana programs are prepared for broadcast by Eric French.

Christopher Purdy is Classical 101's early morning host, 7-10 a.m. weekdays. He is host and producer of Front Row Center – Classical 101’s weekly celebration of Opera and more – as well as Music in Mid-Ohio, Concerts at Ohio State, and the Columbus Symphony broadcast series. He is the regular pre-concert speaker for Columbus Symphony performances in the Ohio Theater.
