Marching bands have come a long way since the days of John Phillip Sousa, the March King.
This weekend the University of Dayton Marching Bands will host the 2021 Bands of America (BOA) Southwest Regional Championship in Dayton and the Central Ohio Championship will be held on September 25 in Obetz. Competing in the event will be high school marching bands from Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
During this hour we’ll look at the history of marching bands, their culture and how they’ve kept pace with changing musical styles.

- Jeremy Earnhart president & CEO of Music for All a non-profit music education events and advocacy organization, which operates the Bands of America competitions
- Nikole Roebuck is chair of the department of music and director of bands for Grambling State University
- Reginald McDonald, director of bands, coordinator of instrumental music, and associate professor of music education at Tennessee State University
- Kenneth Will, director of the Pride of Dayton Marching Band at the University of Dayton
