Private Prisons

North Central Correctional Institution is a privately-operated state prison in Marion, Ohio.
Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction

This episode originally aired on Feb. 3, 2021.

President Biden signed an executive order last week to halt the use of private prisons at the federal level. This reverses a Trump administration policy and aligns with the policy Obama put in place late in his administration.

Opponents of privatization hailed it as an important symbolic gesture and an important first step. Proponents of private prisons say the move undercuts a system that is cost-effective.

Today on All Sides with Ann Fisher, we discuss the pros and cons of the private prison system, and what’s next for immigrants detained in private facilities.

Guests:

  • Jamiles Lartey, reporter, The Marshall Project
  • Reggie Wilkinson, consultant, former director Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction
  • Corene Kendrick, deputy director, ACLU National Prison Project
  • Alexandra Wilkes, national spokesperson, Day 1 Alliance
