The February SpaceX Falcon Heavy Demo Mission launch. SpaceX is one of two private companies that will launch American astronauts into space next year.

American astronauts haven’t been sent into orbit in almost a decade. 

NASA halted its space shuttle program in 2011 because it was too expensive. 

But that’s going to change next year.

The space agency announced last week that four flights will take astronauts to the International Space Station in 2019. The team, called the Commercial Crew Nine, will also be the first people to fly on private spacecrafts.
