Columbus City Council will vote Monday night on a contract that would include much-needed sidewalks near Independence High School on the city's Far East Side.

The 1.3 mile-long project to improve Refugee Road, east of Noe-Bixby Road, includes adding five-foot-wide sidewalks for students and other pedestrians. Refugee Road will be resurfaced from Noe-Bixby Road to Falcon Bridge Drive.

The project is also set to include a parking area paved with bricks and new facilities to hold stormwater.

The $3.9 million contract with Trucco Construction Company, Inc. is part of the city's Operation Sidewalks to build and improve sidewalks, including in areas near schools and to help make walks safer for pedestrians.

Councilwoman Lourdes Barroso De Padilla sponsored the ordinance, which already had a first reading.

On Monday, City Council will also begin two days of interviews for 10 candidates seeking to replace Shayla Favor as the District 7 representative on the council. Favor is vacating her position on the council to become Franklin County's next prosecutor.
