The Columbus Board of Education is implementing new security measures at its meetings beginning with Tuesday night's.

In a release, the school board said that all visitors, staff and board members will be subject to security screenings, including handheld and walk-through metal detectors.

The district will also inspect items brought to the meetings.

Board President Christina Vera said in a statement that the board is addressing potential threats and fostering a culture of safety.

"With the rise in safety concerns nationally, it's crucial that we implement enhanced security measures, including detector screenings,” Vera said.

The board has yet to vote on a task force's recommendations on school closings. As of Monday afternoon, no vote was listed on the board's agenda for Tuesday.

The task force recommended closing the following buildings in June:

  • Buckeye Middle School (where students would be consolidated into Marion-Franklin High School in a 6-12 format.)
  • Fairwood Elementary School (where students would either be consolidated into Ohio Avenue or Livingston elementary schools.)
  • Old McGuffey (Columbus Alternative High School)
  • Broadleigh Elementary School (where students would be consolidated into Eastgate, East Columbus, and Fairmoor elementary schools.)
  • West Broad Elementary School (where students would either be consolidated into Westgate, Highland, or Valleyview elementary schools.)
  • Lindbergh Elementary School (where students would be consolidated into either Binns, Burroughs, or West Mound elementary schools.)
  • Moler Elementary School (where students would either be consolidated into the Lincoln Park or Livingston elementary schools.)
  • North Linden Elementary School (where students would either be consolidated into Huy, Maize, Innis, or Northtowne elementary schools.)
  • Old Eastmoor Middle School (where Columbus City Prepatory School for Boys students would be put into the same building as the Columbus City Preparatory School for Girls.)
  • The McGuffey Facility (where Columbus Alternative High School students and its programming would move to East High School, which would remain open and CAHS would share space in the building.)

Tuesday's meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at the district's Southland Center on South High Street.
