Vice President Kamala Harris delivers a concession speech after the 2024 presidential election, Wednesday, Nov. 6, 2024, on the campus of Howard University in Washington.

In the end, it was the economy, stupid. All the talk about Republicans voting for Harris, wives secretly voting against their husbands, offensive rhetoric aimed at Haitians, Puerto Ricans and long-dead golfers - none of it mattered.

It came down to 72% of Americans being dissatisfied or angry with how things are going, and they blamed the current party and politicians in power. It was that simple.

Donald Trump rolled to a swing state sweep. Bernie Moreno rode President Trump's coattails to Washington. Sherrod Brown's 18-year run in the Senate will come to an end. Republicans swept all three contested seats on the Ohio Supreme Court.

And Issue 1 - the Redistricting Reform Amendment - lost badly, partly because of loaded ballot language, but also because it got caught in the Red Wave that swept Ohio.

David Stebenne, professor of Political History at Ohio State University joins the show.

Snollygoster of the week

In 2006, Florida lawmakers won approval of a constitutional amendment that requires amendments to get 60% of the vote to pass.

Well, this week it paid off. Florida voters, by a 55-45% margin, voted for an amendment to legalize recreational marijuana. Fifty-seven percent of Florida voters also voted for an amendment to protect abortion rights.

Both issues lost, however, because they failed to get the necessary 60% of the vote that the amendment requires.

Oh, and by the way, that 60% amendment itself passed with only 58% of the vote - less than the 60% margin it now imposes on other amendments.
