A vast majority of Americans support new laws to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, but Republican lawmakers seem set on eliminating regulations.

In this week's episode of Snollygoster, Ohio's politics podcast from WOSU, hosts Mike Thompson and Steve Brown discuss Ohio's track record on gun legislation.

Do Something

In 2019, a gunman with an assault-style weapon killed 9 people in 30 seconds on a busy street in Dayton. Since then, Gov. Mike DeWine has been unable to get Republican lawmakers to support any of his efforts for increased background checks and other minimal regulations.

Instead, the GOP-controlled state government has consistently made guns easier to obtain, carry, and use.

In the past decade, Ohio has reduced the number of training hours needed for concealed carry permits, loosened regulations on automatic weapons that fire 31 or more rounds without reloading, allowed concealed gun permit holders to carry guns in daycare centers and on college campuses, enacted a 'stand your ground' law, and eliminated the training requirements and special background checks for getting a concealed gun permit.

Map Quest

The Ohio Supreme Court rejected state legislative district maps submitted by the Ohio Redistricting commission for the 5th time. It was the same map the court rejected in round three of this ongoing debacle.

This is the map a federal court says it is ready to impose for this election cycle if the Ohio Supreme Court and the Republican-led Redistricting Commission could not reach a compromise. So the commission just resubmitted the map in hopes that the federal court does not change its mind.

It looks like those are the maps voters will use in an August primary, because Saturday is the federal court’s deadline for imposing the new map.

Snollygoster of the week

Former governor John Kasich and US Senate Candidate Tim Ryan are proudly boasting that they are on the list of 900 Americans who the Russian government has prohibited from entering Russia. Tim Ryan thanked Russia for recognizing his support of Ukraine. Kasich used the fact in a fundraising email blast.
