In the wake of the mass shooting in Dayton, Gov. Mike DeWine has outlined a series of legislative actions he wants the legislature to take up to address mental health and gun violence. DeWine's 17-point plan includes a version of a "Red Flag Law" that allows a court to confiscate firearms from someone who poses a threat to themselves or others. He also proposed extended background checks for gun purchases.
Both are measures long supported by Democrats and advocates, but they may prove a tough sell for the Republican-controlled Generally Assembly. Gun groups are also split on the proposals.

Columbus School Board members Gary Baker and Shawna Gibbs will travel to Miami to attend the annual Council of Urban Boards of Education conference in September, at a cost of $2,600 each.
That seems reasonable, but both of them are lame ducks - they're not seeking re-election and will leave office December 31. So whatever professional development they gain, they won't have much time to put it to work for Columbus schools..
