The Atlantic recently compiled a list of 136 novels that it deemed the most consequential of the last century.

The list set off a discussion about what constitutes the “great American novel.”

Not all classics made the list, including titles such as “To Kill A Mockingbird.”

So, what is the value of classifying literature in this way?
