Ohio Supreme Court Building in 1933
The current home to the Ohio Supreme Court in Columbus had a tragic start and was originally home to other state agencies.
According to the Ohio Historical Society records, the building which now houses the Ohio Supreme Court in downtown Columbus, Ohio was originally built for the state departments of Aeronautics, Agriculture, Commerce, Education, Health, Highways, Public Welfare, Public Works, Industrial Relations and Taxation.
It opened in 1933, a year after an explosion damaged the front of the building and killed some construction workers. The building was originally slated to open in 1932, which is the year engraved on a stone at the front of the building.
The building also housed the departments of the Industrial Commission, and the State Library of Ohio. Now the building is home to the Ohio Supreme Court.
Columbus historian Tom Betti shares a postcard of the building and talks about it's architecture significance.
