A dentist is under investigation by the Grove City Police Department and the Ohio State Dental Board after a 61-year-old patient died in February after being sedated for a routine procedure.

Michael Beesler, a patient at Grove City Dental on Feb. 13, died at Mount Carmel in Grove City later that day. He had gone into the office for a cleaning, extractions and other dental work.

Grove City Police are now investigating Beesler's death, but have not announced any charges.

A 911 call placed that day started with a staff member at the dental office telling the operator a patient was sedated and they couldn't find his pulse.

According to the police report, when fire crews arrived on scene, they helped Dr. Scott Schumann render CPR until medics arrived.

Schumann said in a statement he and his team were shocked and saddened and that they follow strict safety regulations. He said he and his office are cooperating with authorities.

Schumann already had his license suspended twice in 2002 and 2005 due to misuse of drugs or alcohol according to documents from the Ohio State Dental Board, which is also investigating Schumann.

Schumann's license was reinstated in 2016.

Schumann and his staff also provided handwritten testimony to police, which was included in the report obtained by WOSU. In the statements, the staff said Beesler had been given anesthesia and pills before his planned procedures.

They said Beesler's oxygen levels dropped. One employee reported, Beesler "did not look good.”

WOSU has requested Beesler's autopsy report from the Franklin County Coroner's Office and are waiting to receive it.
