Adam Coy, the former Columbus police officer convicted of murder earlier this month in the 2020 shooting death of Andre Hill, was scheduled to be sentenced Monday. But the sentencing has been delayed.
Coy's defense team is asking the judge for more time, as they request a new trial.
A jury found Adam Coy guilty on charges of murder, reckless homicide and felonious assault. Coy was on duty when he shot and killed Hill, as Hill was obeying Coy's commands to exit a garage.
Coy's attorneys argue that he mistakenly believed Hill was holding a gun in his hand. Hill was holding a set of keys.
His defense team wants more time to sort out their request for a new trial. Coy's attorneys state prosecutors knew of an expert witness who would have testified that Coy's decision to shoot Hill was a justified mistake.
Instead, the attorneys argued in a motion that Franklin County prosecutors dropped that expert in exchange for one who supported the state's narrative.
The defense team argued that move deprived Coy of his rights during the trial, and they asking the judge to schedule a hearing on their request.
Prosecutors haven't filed a response.
After Coy was convicted, his bond was revoked and he's being held in the Franklin County Jail.
A new date hasn't been scheduled for Coy's sentencing.
