Columbus firefighter charged with vehicular homicide for fatal fire truck crash

Columbus Division of Fire
WOSU

A Columbus firefighter is on administrative duty while facing an aggravated vehicular homicide charge related to a fatal crash that happened July 23 on the east outerbelt near Gahanna.

Court documents, filed Tuesday in Franklin County Municipal Court, show Gahanna Police allege 25-year-old Tyler Conners, of Columbus, was negligent when he turned a Columbus fire truck left onto a turnaround from the middle lane of I-270 North.

A crash report says a car driving in the left lane veered into the turnaround to avoid a collision, but still hit the front of the firetruck. A pickup truck behind them tried to brake, but ran into the rear of the fire truck, which was protruding into the highway.

The 63-year-old man driving the pickup truck died and his passenger, a 62-year-old woman, was taken to Mount Carmel East Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. and the crash report lists the driving conditions at the time as dark and rainy.

Columbus Division of Fire confirmed Conners is on administrative duty until the conclusion of the criminal case and said an administrative investigation will determine whether he violated any division policies.

In a statement, the Division of Fire says their hearts are with the family of the victim and all those impacted by the accident.

Conners is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at 9 a.m. in Franklin County Municipal Court.
