Law enforcement shot and killed two suspects, one male and one female, after the two allegedly stole a semi-truck, took a hostage and led police on a multi-county chase that ended in Dayton.
The London Police Department said in a news release that around 1 a.m. Wednesday a London Police Officer pulled over a vehicle on U.S. 42 North with no rear lights or visible registration. Body camera footage released Wednesday shows the officer communicating with the two for several minutes before the vehicle abruptly pulls away.
Police said the officer chased the two to the TA Travel Center truck stop at U.S. 42 and Interstate 70 where they fled on foot. As the officer attempted to tase one of them, the male suspect fell and pointed a handgun at the officer.
The suspects then got into a nearby semi truck with no trailer and took a person already inside the truck hostage. As they were fleeing they struck a police patrol car but no officers were injured.
Police said the Ohio State Highway Patrol and Madison County Sheriff's Office joined London police and pursued the suspects through Clark and Greene counties to Montgomery County just off of Interstate 70 on the access road to the Dayton International Airport.
Ohio State Highway Patrol sent an update at 9:50 a.m. that the standoff ended. OSHP said the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office personnel were attempting to negotiate with the suspects when troopers arrived on the scene.
At approximately 7:30 a.m. troopers approached the semi in an attempt to remove the hostage but were shot at. OHSP said troopers returned fire, striking both the male and female suspects.
Both suspects were transported to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton and both were pronounced dead.
The hostage was removed from the area with only minor injuries and no officers were injured.
The incident is being investigated by the Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
