Columbus City Schools announced plans Friday to appoint an interim superintendent after the recent retirement announcement of superintendent Talisa Dixon.
A letter posted to the district's website by Columbus Board of Education President Jennifer Adair said district officials intend to name CCS' Chief of Transformation and Leadership Angela Chapman as the interim superintendent effective Jan.1, 2023.
In her current position, Chapman oversees area superintendents and principals throughout the district.
Chapman came to the district in June 2019 after spending five years as an instructional superintendent and chief of elementary for the District of Columbia Public Schools. She has also worked as an administrator in other districts including Massillon City Schools, Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools and the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District.
Adair said in a released statement, "We are confident in Dr. Chapman’s ability to the lead the district as we move forward with a national search for a new superintendent. Despite this change in leadership, the work will not stop or diminish. Our dedicated teachers, administrators, and staff will continue to serve our students, their families, and our community. The Board of Education remains committed to improving student outcomes and developing Portrait-ready graduates."
Dixon announced on Thursday that she would retire on June 30, 2023. She has served as Columbus' superintendent since March 2019.
