The Ohio State University resumed construction on its huge inpatient hospital tower, after it was halted when officials said cracking was found in one concrete column on Nov. 21.
The university says the cracking appeared to be localized to one of hundreds of columns on the Wexner Medical Center inpatient hospital currently under construction.
The entire construction site will be open, but the specific area where the cracked column was found will remain a controlled access zone until all repair work is finished. Officials determined construction was able to safely resume at the site after inspections were made. All repairs on the impacted column are expected to be finished later this week.
In a statement made when the cracking was initially found, the university said it first shut down steel work and then paused all construction at the site on Nov. 22 out of an abundance of caution.
There are more than 60 additional concrete or steel columns on each level of the structure.
The 26-floor tower will cost nearly $2 billion and include 820 beds.
