Ohio State University officials plan to add safety upgrades to parking garages this week.
In an emailed statement, OSU President Kristina Johnson said surveillance cameras will be installed at the Ohio Union garages. The university also expects to have license plate reader cameras installed near the garages by the end of the week. Thirty are already installed in the University District, as part of its partnership with the city in fighting crime. In all, 60 will be installed for a new pilot program in the area.
“We continue to closely monitor crime on and around campus and have increased police and security patrols on campus and in parking lots and garages,” Johnson said in a new Health, Safety and Well-being Update video. “The university and city of Columbus are in regular communication about crime and crime trends.”
The move comes after an increasing number of crimes around the university. The most recent occurred early Sunday morning when a man and woman were assaulted walking back to their car inside the Ohio Union South Parking Garage.
