More than two dozen staffers and six patients have contracted COVID-19 at Ohio State East Hospital.

The 27 employees worked on the patient care unit and tested positive between December 20 and January 1. Hospital officials say six patients who tested negative originally contracted the virus while there.

An initial review shows the outbreak developed after one employee came to work with symptoms.

In a press release, Ohio State Wexner Chief medical officer Dr. Andy Thomas explains they are “contact tracing and testing all staff and patients who spent significant time on the unit during that timeframe.”

Thomas goes on to say they’re reviewing safety and hygiene policies and urging employees to stay home if they have even mild symptoms.

The hospital says the cluster of cases appears confined to the patient care unit.
