Ohio State’s Athletics Department has cancelled a women's basketball game scheduled for Wednesday evening due to COVID-19 results from their planned opponents.
The women’s basketball team was slated to play against the University of Akron.
"The decision was made out of an abundance of caution & with the welfare of the student-athletes, coaches & staff in mind after Akron shared results of its most recent testing," the Athletics Department said in a statement.
Ohio State's statement does not elaborate on the details of those test results, but says the cancellation was in keeping with their protocols for non-conference opponents.
This game would have been the season opener for Ohio State women's basketball. They will now play their first game Sunday, November 29.
Ohio State men’s basketball is still scheduled to play against Illinois State on Wednesday afternoon. The Athletics Department says that game is not currently affected by the women's game cancellation.
