Long-time Republican prosecutor Ron O'Brien lost his bid for a seventh term. O'Brien conceded the race early Wednesday morning to Democratic retired judge Gary Tyack.
Tyack received 53% percent of the vote compared to 47% for O'Brien, according to unofficial results from the Franklin County Board of Elections.
Tyack, a former 10th District Court of Appeals Judge, said on Facebook early Wednesday morning that he wants to make the prosecutor's office work for everyone.
"Franklin County — thank you for placing your faith in me. We will ensure we build a prosecutor’s office that works for everyone — period," Tyack said.
O'Brien tweeted early Wednesday morning that he looks forward to working with Tyack for a smooth transition.
Tyack supported the plan to create a Columbus Police Civilian Review Board, which was approved by Columbus voters on Tuesday. During a candidates' forum, Tyack said O'Brien never once indicted a white police officer for any crime where an officer has shot somebody.
