Although Ohio has flipped its presidential votes several times over the last few years, because of gerrymandering, the partisan makeup of its congressional delegation has been locked at 12 Republicans and four Democrats. That could change soon, as Ohio revises the way it draws the Congressional map, but at the moment it's an uphill battle for any challenger looking to oust an incumbent.
This year, the most interesting races to watch happened in the suburbs. Democrats hoped that, outside of reliably-blue cities, ongoing demographic shifts and the divisive national environment could help flip at least one U.S. House seat. But that didn't come to pass.
In Ohio's 1st District, outside of Cincinnati, polls showed Democrat Kate Schroder leading Republican Rep. Steve Chabot going into the day, but the AP called the race for Chabot with a lead of about 8 points. It was the tighest of the contests on Election Night, with the race call coming just before midnight.
Rep. Troy Balderson has won his seat by about 6 points on Democratic challenger Alaina Shearer in Ohio's 12th District, near Columbus, while Rep. Mike Turner is about 15 points ahead of Democrat Desiree Tims in Ohio's 10th District, near Dayton.
Democrats did manage to hold onto a competitive seat in Ohio's 13th District, around Youngstown, where Rep. Tim Ryan staved off a challenge from Republican Christina Hagan. Trump won the region in 2016, and since then, Republicans have eyed Ryan's seat as a potential pickup if they want to reclaim control of the U.S. House.
