A Columbus Police officer is expected to recover after being shot Thursday morning on the city’s Northeast Side.
In a post on Twitter, Columbus Police says the officer was "critically injured" after an incident at 3204 Chelford Drive.
Speaking to press later, Columbus Police Chief Tom Quinlan says a tactical unit conducted an operation this morning, and that the officer was struck by gunfire during the operation.
"The officer was transported to Mount Carmel East hospital in critical condition," Quinlan says. "At the time he underwent emergency surgery, and the hospital has just been tremendous and done a great job."
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost says the shooter is a city resident. That person shot the officer through a wall this morning when a multi-unit police team entered the suspect's home.
The department has not yet named the officer. Quinlan says that the officer's condition is now stable, but he has a long road of recovery ahead of him.
"Every indication points to his ability to recover from what were very serious gun shot wounds," Quinlan says.
