Ohio Rep. Joyce Beatty won her primary in the 3rd Congressional District on Tuesday night.

After a long night waiting on results, Rep. Joyce Beatty won her primary race, and appears primed to win her fifth term representing the heavily Democratic 3rd Congressional District.

To win the nomination, Beatty had to overcome an energetic challenge from Morgan Harper, a progressive first-time candidate.

The four-term incumbent built her pitch to voters on the federal investments she has been able to secure for the district. Tuesday night, before results came in, she struck an optimistic tone.

“I’ve done all that I could do for as many as I could do," Beatty said. "You always run hard no matter whether you have an opponent or not, and that’s what I do. I fight for the people, I stand up for the people, I bring things back to the district.”

Beatty ultimately won handily over Harper, 68-32%.

Beatty will face Republican Mark Richardson in the general election. Richardson overwhelmingly defeated Cleophus Dulaney in the GOP primary, 86-14%.

But November's election favors Beatty heavily. According to congressional forecasters at the Cook Political Report, Democrats hold an almost 20-point advantage in the gerrymandered district.

Ohio's in-person primary, originally scheduled for March 17, was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic. Lawmakers then extended absentee voting until April 28.

Beyond the 3rd District, WOSU is following along as Ohio votes for the Democratic presidential primary, primaries for all 12 U.S. House seats, and primaries for the state legislature.

While mail-in ballots had to be postmarked by Monday, polls will officially close Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The below tallies will update as soon as votes start to come in from the Ohio Secretary of State's Office.
