Ohio State's star defensive lineman and Heisman Trophy hopeful Chase Young will not play in Saturday's game against Maryland as the school looks into a "possible NCAA issue."The annoucement came in a Friday morning email from Associate Athletics Director Jerry Emig. The school provided no other details aside from "the Department of Athletics is looking into it," but Young posted an explanation for the issue in a later tweet.
"I made a mistake last year by accepting a loan from a family friend I've known since the summer before my freshman year at OSU," Young wrote in a statement. "I repaid it in full last summer, and I'm working with the University and NCAA to get back on the field as soon as possible."
Young skyrocketed to national fame this year as he put together one of the best seasons for a defensive player in Ohio State history. Young has 13.5 sacks through the Buckeyes' first eight games, just a half-sack shy of the season record. It appeared nearly certain Young would break the record in the season's final four games.
The breakout season had Young listed among the likely finalists for the Heisman Trophy, the annual award given to college football's best player. It hasn't been awarded to a defensive player since Michigan's Charles Woodson won it in 1997.
