An already water-logged Central Ohio is about to get even wetter. The National Weather Service predicts more heavy rainfall will hit the region on Monday and Tuesday, following a rainy weekend that brought flooding to parts of the area.
A flash flood watch remains in effect until 8 p.m. Tuesday.
In Marion County, State Route 203 remains closed between the village of Prospect and State Route 4 because of flooding from the Scioto River. Several roads were flooded around Marion and Union counties over the weekend, including some streets in the village of Richwood.
The National Weather Service predicts above-average precipitation will continue through August.
In Delaware County, a weekend malfunction with a new tornado shelter prompted an apology by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Several campers at Delaware State Park sought shelter after the sounding of tornado sirens late Saturday night, but the new shelter failed to automatically open as designed.
“Effective immediately, temporary measures are in place to ensure the shelter at Delaware State Park is accessible. Our agencies are working together to determine exactly why the designated shelter failed to open in a timely manner Saturday evening,” reads an ODNR statement. “Our staff responded as quickly as possible to resolve the delay, and we are working to make certain it doesn’t happen again. We apologize to any guests who were unable to seek immediate shelter.”
The shelter opened last month and was funded with a mix of local and state tax dollars.
