It's about to get more expensive to register your vehicle in Columbus.
Columbus City Council on Monday approved an ordinance adding a $5 fee to vehicle registrations. The tax takes effect next year.
“The revenues derived from the tax levied will be deposited into the municipal motor vehicle tax fund, which is estimated to bring an additional revenue of $3.6 million, which will pay for commodities and equipment needed for street and traffic maintenance," Council member Shayla Favor said at the Monday meeting.
The vote follows Franklin County Commissioners adding a similar fee. That means Columbus drivers will be paying $10 more for registrations when local offices begin collecting the fees in January.
The state transportation budget approved earlier this year lets local governments add fees to vehicle registrations.
The Columbus ordinance says it also applies to drivers in other parts of Franklin County, as well as vehicles registered in Delaware and Fairfield Counties.
