The Columbus Crew kick off a new season Saturday, not long after it appeared the 2019 season might not happen at all for the soccer club.
#SavetheCrew became a local rallying cry in 2017 when then-owner Anthony Precourt laid out plans to move the team to Austin, Texas. Precourt pointed to what he called “unsustainable” attendance and corporate support situations at MAPFRE Stadium, the first soccer-specific stadium in Major League Soccer history.
Precourt’s plans prompted a massive campaign by Crew supporters to save one of Major League Soccer’s flagship franchises. That effort culminated last October with a new ownership group including Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam and former Crew team doctor Pete Edwards.
The 2019 season also starts with a new head coach. Caleb Porter replaces Gregg Berhalter, the new coach of the U.S. men's national team. Porter most recently coached MLS’ Portland Timbers which, under his leadership, beat the Crew to win the MLS Cup in 2015.
The Crew will once again play in MAPFRE Stadium in 2019. Team executives hope to play in a new Arena District venue for the 2021 season.
