Rutherford B. Hayes High School in Delaware closed Thursday and a student is in policy custody following a threat.
Two students reported they overheard a classmate making threatening remarks on Wednesday.
“These students were instrumental in making sure that this information got reported,” says Jennifer Ruhe of Delaware City Schools. “We could proactively take care of this without something more serious happening.”
Delaware police officer Adam Moore says the department investigated the report and arrested 18-year-old Troy Ferguson.
“We currently have obtained a warrant for a felony charge for inducing panic against that student,” Moore said, “and that was the pretenses under which he was taken into custody.”
Ferguson is currently being evaluated in a secured medical facility.
“We often times spend a lot of effort educating folks that if you see something say something,” Moore says, “and in this particular situation that worked perfectly to keep everyone safe.”
The school plans to resume classes Friday.
