Attorney General Mike DeWine has succeeded in his bid to become Ohio's next governor, defeating Democrat Richard Cordray.

With Gov. John Kasich stepping down after two terms, DeWine beat Cordray in the race to replace him. Cordray conceded the race at around 11:30 p.m.
After months of campaigning, and a record amount of fundraising, polls showed the race essentially tied going into Election Day. As the night ended, though, DeWine led Cordray by 4.7 percent, or about 200,000 votes.
DeWine served for eight years as Ohio Attorney General, and he ran on a record of clearing the state's backlog of rape kits and leading the fight against the opioid epidemic. He secured the endorsements of both President Trump and Kasich, a notable critic of the president, and appeared with each in the week leading up to the election.
Cordray is the former head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and he touted his role as a watchdog often on the campaign trail. He had the backing of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who helped create the bureau, and former President Barack Obama, who appointed him to the role.
Travis Irvine ran as the Libertarian candidate, and Constance Gadell-Newton ran as the Green Party candidate.
DeWine will head into his first term as governor with a Republican supermajority in the Ohio General Assembly.
