A 28-year-old man was killed in a confrontation with Columbus Police on Thursday afternoon in Northland. An officer was also wounded in the exchange.
According to Columbus Police Sgt. Rich Weiner, officers were dispatched to 4889 Sinclair Road after receiving a call about two men arguing at a nearby hotel.
Weiner said when the officers arrived at America's Best Value Inn, they found a vehicle belonging to a man wanted for kidnapping. Hotel employees said the man was staying in one of the rooms.
"[The officers] knocked on the door," Weiner said. "Moments later, they were met with gunfire."
According to Weiner, the suspect then emerged from the room, exchanged gunfire with officers and was wounded. He was transported to Grant Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police are not releasing the name of the suspect at this time.
An officer, whose name has also not been released, received a minor wound to the leg and was treated at Riverside Hospital.
Investigators are still looking into the suspect to see if he was responsible for the initial call, and if he is the man wanted for kidnapping. They are also reviewing body camera footage to determine who exactly fired shots.
WOSU has requested the footage, but police say they are not releasing it yet.
