Ohio’s two Senators are weighing in on President Trump’s U.S. Supreme Court pick.
On Monday, President Donald Trump tapped D.C. Circuit Court Judge Brett Kavanaugh to fill the U.S. Supreme Court seat vacated by Anthony Kennedy. Republican Sen. Rob Portman said on Tuesday that he's enthusiastic about the choice, and optimistic about the confirmation process.
“I think most Americans will be very impressed as they get to know him, not just because of his intelligence and his qualifications and his experience as a judge but his character," Portman said.
Portman explains he’s known Kavanaugh, who worked in the George W. Bush administration, for about 15 years.
Portman's Democratic counterpart, Sen. Sherrod Brown, is more circumspect. In an emailed statement, Brown noted his concerns about Kavanaugh's stances on women’s rights and consumer rights—Kavanaugh would tip the court toward a 5-4 Republican majority, likely for decades.
Brown says he plans to meet with Kavanaugh, but won’t support a justice "who would take rights away from Ohioans.”
