The small Ohio village of Kirkersville unveiled a monument to its fallen police chief as a tribute on the one-year anniversary of the nursing home attack that left four dead.
Kirkersville mayor Terry Ashcraft, along with city council members and police, held a memorial on May 12 to honor fallen Police Chief Eric DiSario. In front of the police department, they unveiled a bench honoring the chief, who had only been on the job for a month when he was killed.
Last May, suspected shooter Thomas Hartless fatally shot DiSario when the chief responded to an attack at Pine Kirk Care Center, where Hartless killed home nurse Marlina Medrano and nurse's aide Cindy Krantz.
Officials say Medrano had received civil protection orders against Hartless in connection with domestic violence charges. Hartless killed himself after the attack.
The death of 36-year-old DiSario left Kirkersville without a police department for months, a vacancy that was only recently filled.
The bench was paid for with a grant by Licking County officials, and was purchased from the local funeral director in Kirkersville.
Kirkersville is a village of some 500 residents, about 25 miles east of Columbus.
